Matthew takes on the Kiltwalk

Born at just 29 weeks, Matthew’s hospital journey began with his first operation at six months old. From that moment, he became a regular at the children’s hospital.

Mum Coady said, “He goes to three or four appointments a month and receives input from so many specialists – ophthalmology, respiratory care, child development… He’s also recently received a formal diagnosis of autism. But he takes everything in his stride!

“Matthew turns 10 in a couple of months, and we’ve received a decade’s worth of support from ECHC. The hospital spaces feel so bright and inviting, thanks to all the work the charity has done to make it feel that way. It feels familiar to him.

He looks forward to going to the hospital, and that’s half the battle.

“He looks forward to going to the hospital, and that’s half the battle. In between appointments, we love visiting the Hub. There’s always a friendly team member or volunteer to greet us. Knowing he feels safe and secure is so important. As a parent, it helps tremendously to calm my anxiety.

“We’ve been doing the Kiltwalk together for the past five years. Matthew has hypermobility, which makes walking difficult, so he uses his wheelchair. He gives it his best effort and always makes sure to walk over the finish line.

“We’re quite outdoorsy, so we spend a lot of time out and about preparing for it. He loves the experience. Meeting people, getting dressed up in his kilt, seeing everyone cheering him on… it’s all very special for him. And of course, the Irn Bru at the end is extra motivation!”

Let’s give three cheers for unstoppable Matthew and Coady and wish them the best of luck for this year’s Kiltwalk!
